UnionPay cards are accepted at almost all merchants and ATMs in South Africa.

    Recommended Shopping malls and markets: Airport Duty Free shops, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Canal Walk, Johannesburg Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, Bryanston Organic & Natural market.

  • POS acceptance
    Almost all merchants accept UnionPay cards. Merchants include major airports hotels, tourist attractions, local craft stores, etc. Since that some of the merchants have yet to put up the UnionPay signage, cardholders may show their UnionPay cards upon the till and inquire about UnionPay acceptance.

    Dual brand cards are not accepted as UnionPay cards in South Africa, please use UnionPay single-branded card (card number starting with 62) to enjoy various UnionPay offers.
  • Cash withdrawal
    In South Africa, almost all ATMs accept UnionPay cards. UnionPay cards can be accepted for withdrawing South African Rand and for balance inquiry First National Bank, ABSA Bank, Standard Bank and Nedbank.  There are UnionPay   signage on these ATMs or the ATM screen, and ABSA bank ATMs provide the interface in Chinese.

Daily cash withdrawal limit from respective issuers and/or ATM may apply. Please consult your issuer on the possible cap on the amount. You may split your withdrawals into several times which comply with the limit(s).
  • Charges
    ATM commission fee consists of two parts:
    (1)Service fee charged by the issuer: please consult the issuer for details.
    (2)Service fee charged by the ATM acquirer in South Africa: some ATMs will charge commission fee, which is charged by the local banks in South Africa and which has nothing to do with UnionPay or the issuer.

    Cash withdrawal via debit card results in a lower commission fee.
  • Tips
    Select PINs that cannot be easily guessed by anyone.
    Never disclose your PIN to anyone who claims to represent the bank or the police.
    Be alert to your surroundings before conducting any banking transactions.
    Keep a close eye on your credit card during transaction to avoid any illegal activities.
    If your UnionPay card has been stolen/lost, please inform the issuer immediately.
