6 July 2021, Bandar Seri Begawan — Baiduri Bank, Brunei’s leading conventional bank, Brunei’s premier telco Datastream Digital (DST) and international payment brand UnionPay have collaborated to launch the DSTPay digital mobile wallet for their customers in Brunei. 

DSTPay is both Baiduri and UnionPay’s first Quick Response (QR) Code payment solution in Brunei. The app also marks UnionPay International’s (UPI) first mobile wallet in South East Asia that features a tripartite collaboration of a bank, telco and international payment network.   

With this launch, customers of Baiduri Bank and UPI will be able to use DSTPay to scan QR Codes at over 200 merchant outlets from diverse industries such as food and beverage, supermarkets, mini-marts, retail, services and more in Brunei. When international travel resumes, they can conveniently scan QR Codes for payments at over 30 million merchants in 45 markets, and in favourite travel destinations of Bruneians such as Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and Thailand. In the future, customers will also be able to use DSTPay to pay by simply tapping their phones for contactless payments at 25 million UnionPay merchants globally. 

The UnionPay QR Code is based on the global EMVCo. standard and offers many benefits – it is a quick, convenient and secure contactless payment method for consumers. As for merchants, QR Code is not only much faster to set up for cashless payment, but also cost less to set up compared to traditional card payment.

This digital wallet initiative is also in line with the digital payment roadmap initiated by Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) as part of its strategic initiatives to drive digital transformation for consumers and businesses in Brunei. AMBD is a statutory body that undertakes several core functions, chief of which are the formulation and implementation of monetary policies, regulation and supervision of financial institutions and currency management.

The DSTPay app is now available on both the App Store and Google Play for download. After successful registration process, customers will be eligible to apply for a digital co-branded UnionPay card on the Digital Wallet.
