UnionPay-Powered Huawei Pay Debuts in Malaysia Marking the Fifth International Product Launch This Year
2020-11-17

UnionPay International (UPI) announced today its cooperation with Huawei and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Malaysia (ICBC Malaysia) to launch its mobile payment product Huawei Pay in Malaysia for the first time, giving local residents access to the convenient tap-and-go payment services. This collaboration also makes Malaysia the fifth market outside Mainland China where the product is introduced this year, following China’s Macao, Thailand, Pakistan, and Singapore.

The demand of residents around the world for safe and easy-to-use contactless payment services has been increasing since the outbreak of COVID-19. UPI, in partnership with Huawei and major local banks, has been accelerating the localization of its mobile payment product Huawei Pay, and now serves UnionPay cardholders of 12 banks in seven markets outside Mainland China. In markets such as Pakistan, UPI has also introduced the “NFC & QRC all in one” product, which adds QR code payment service on top of Huawei Pay.

As a result of this cooperation, ICBC Malaysia cardholders can easily link their UnionPay cards to the Huawei Wallet and make tap-and-go payments at more than 20 million POS terminals in 52 countries and regions, among which more than 100,000 are Malaysian merchants in various sectors such as transportation, retail, and F&B.

UnionPay is a payment brand familiar to Malaysian residents. Currently, nearly all local ATMs and over 90% of merchants accept UnionPay cards, and more than 1 million UnionPay cards have been issued in the country. UnionPay is also in partnership with two major telecom operators in Malaysia to issue virtual cards on a large scale through the e-wallets of these partners. Cardholders will be able to make local and cross-border purchases using UnionPay QR codes once their card application is successful.

In recent years, UPI has been accelerating its development of overseas mobile services in response to the digitalization of the payment industry. At present, UnionPay mobile payment services are supported in 60 markets outside Mainland China, and more than 90 e-wallet products conforming to UnionPay specifications have been made available in 14 non-Chinese mainland countries and regions. In the first three quarters of this year, the overseas UnionPay mobile payment purchases have more than doubled year-on-year, and the overseas QR code purchases have nearly tripled.
