UnionPay International Partners with Huawei to Launch Huawei Pay in Singapore

UnionPay International (UPI) joins hands with Huawei and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) Singapore to launch Huawei Pay service in Singapore. Singapore Huawei and Honor mobile phone users can now add their UnionPay credit cards issued by ICBC to the Huawei Wallet app to make easy tap-and-go payments with their mobile phones in 47 countries and regions. In Singapore, they can enjoy the service at about 35,000 local POS terminals.

In response to changes in consumer payment habits, UPI is making greater efforts in rolling out its mobile payment services in global markets over the past few years. Huawei is an important partner of UPI. In 2018, UPI and Huawei signed a global cooperation agreement, and have since launched Huawei Pay in Russia, Hong Kong, and Pakistan.

During the COVID-19, the launch of Huawei Pay provides Singapore customers with a safer and easier payment option. To use Huawei Pay, customers do not need to wake the mobile phone or open the app, and the payment can be completed in seconds, reducing the risk of epidemic transmission caused by people gathering. Local merchants accepting this service include the largest supermarket group NTUC FairPrice, the largest retail group Dairy Farm Group stores, and about 10,000 local taxis.

To date, more than 4.5 million merchants in 57 countries and regions have accepted UnionPay mobile payment services, and 13 countries and regions have launched 53 e-wallets developed or upgraded with UnionPay standards to support local UnionPay cardholders to make tap-and-go or scan-and-go payments.

UnionPay is a familiar payment brand for Singapore residents. UnionPay cardsa are accepted by almost all local ATMs and over 90% of merchants. Six local institutions including ICBC Singapore have issued UnionPay cards.
