On July 27, UnionPay International announced that Nedbank would enable all of its ATMs and POS terminals to accept UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62). So far, UnionPay cards have been fully accepted by all the four major banks in South Africa. It is estimated that by the end of the first quarter next year, over 90% of ATMs and POS terminals in South Africa will be able to accept UnionPay cards.
The communication between China and Africa becomes increasingly close. On the one hand, more and more Chinese people work in Africa in fields of infrastructure construction and communications. On the other hand, China is also one of the major tourist sources for Africa. In the first four months of this year, the number of Chinese tourists to South Africa has grown by 65% year-on-year. To meet people’s demand for cross-border payment, UnionPay International has realized cooperation with the four major banks in South Africa, namely Standard Bank, First National Bank of South Africa, Barclays Africa and Nedbank, to rapidly expand its acceptance footprint.
UnionPay International and Nedbank signed an agreement to: First, enable the latter’s about 50,000 POS terminals and over 3,600 ATMs to accept UnionPay cards. The majority of Nedbank’s merchants are popular travel-and-entertainment merchants, and over 50% of the POS terminals accept the contactless payment via UnionPay cards. Second, enable the Bank’s online merchants to accept UnionPay cards, including the two largest local chain hotels, Sun International and Tsogo Sun. Third, jointly issue Travel-themed UnionPay cards next year to deliver payment convenience to local residents for their daily life and international travels.
In this January, UnionPay International also signed an agreement with Barclays Africa to enable all the latter’s ATMs and merchants in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to accept UnionPay cards. This project is progressing smoothly. Now, Barclays Africa’s branches in South Africa, Kenya and Mauritius have realized the acceptance of UnionPay cards. Barclays’ ATMs also provide interface in Chinese to offer convenience to Chinese cardholders.
At present, the UnionPay acceptance network has expanded to 160 countries and regions, covering over 35 million merchants and over 2 million ATMs around the world. 48 countries in Africa accept payment and cash withdrawal with UnionPay cards. Congo (Kinshasa) and Mauritius have issued UnionPay debit cards, prepaid cards, and commercial cards.
