Taiwan provides an exclusive privilege for online tuition payment via UnionPay cards

With the new semester approaching, UnionPay International announced on January 26, that it joined hands with Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Cooperative Bank, CTBC Bank and Yuanta Bank in providing an exclusive privilege of service fees exemption for online tuition payment via UnionPay cards (card number starting with “62”) so as to satisfy the needs for secure and convenient tuition payment of mainland students who study in Taiwan.

The number of mainland students studying in Taiwan has set records for five consecutive years, and those for short-term study have exceeded 20,000. Since last year, UnionPay International has successively launched the tuition payment platform accepting UnionPay cards through cooperation with the four major banks in Taiwan. The platform, which covers over 70% of the local colleges, not only provides convenient payment service for the mainland students studying in Taiwan, but also serves the children of Taiwan businessmen who are doing business in the mainland who study back home. UnionPay debit cards and UnionPay credit cards issued globally are all accepted for online tuition payment.

Prior to December 31, 2016, paying tuition online with UnionPay cards through the platforms of the four major banks in Taiwan, namely Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Cooperative Bank, CTBC Bank and Yuanta Bank, cardholders do not need to pay service fees. Meanwhile, when paying TWD 20,000 or more in a single payment via the Yuanta School Service Website developed by Yuanta Bank, cardholders will be able to draw a lottery and have the chance to win an iPhone 6.

Log on the tuition payment platforms of the aforementioned four banks, fill in the bank account number and personal information as per the tuition list, and select “UnionPay Online Payment” after entering the payment page, the payment is thus completed. This online tuition payment is easy to operate, and the funds are transferred quickly while support transaction tracking. There is no need to conduct cross-border remittances or carry large amounts of cash. The UnionPay Online Payment ensures the security of cross-border online payment through multiple safety measures and risk monitoring.

In Taiwan, almost all ATMs and over 70% of the local merchants accept UnionPay cards. The merchants include shopping malls, restaurants, and tourist attractions. In addition, students studying in Taiwan can pay with UnionPay cards at chain bookstores like Kingstone and Eslite. From now to March 31, 2016, Eslite Bookstore provides exclusive privilege for UnionPay cards: spending over TWD 3,000 in a single day, cardholders will get a TWD 300 cash voucher. In addition, Taiwan High Speed Rail, TRA, and Taiwan Taxis all accept UnionPay cards for fare payment. Cardholders can also pay with UnionPay cards in Taipei night markets via mPOS terminals.

Currently, the UnionPay card payment service system for exchange students has basically covered the major destinations favored by Chinese exchange students. Over 1,200 overseas colleges and universities, including those in the US, Australia, and the UK, accept UnionPay cards for tuition payment. Exchange students can enjoy the secure, convenient and preferential payment services provided by UnionPay on campus, in local tourist attractions and business districts, and even when travel in other countries and regions.
