On September 18, UnionPay International and Taishin Bank jointly declared that, by the end of 2016, all merchants of Taishin Bank would accept UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62). This increases the acceptance scope of local merchants accepting UnionPay cards to 85%, and contactless terminals will accept UnionPay “QuickPass” comprehensively. The unremitting improvement of contactless acceptance environment in Taiwan lays a solid foundation for promoting innovative businesses such as mobile payment. Cai Jianbo, CEO of UnionPay International, and Shang Ruiqiang, CEO of Taishin Financial Holdings, attended the signing ceremony.

As Taishin Bank is one of the large-scale commercial banks in Taiwan, some of its merchants have been enabled to accept UnionPay cards prior to such cooperation. This time, UnionPay International deepens its cooperation with Taishin Bank for the purpose of continuously expanding the acceptance scope of UnionPay cards, expanding channel construction of innovation payment and further optimizing the card using experience of cardholders. With the implementation of the agreement, such well-known department stores as Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, chain convenient stores, supermarkets, chain apparel shops, restaurants and other merchants of daily purchase in Taiwan will accept UnionPay “QuickPass”.

UnionPay “QuickPass” is a contactless payment application taking UnionPay chip cards as its security assurance. Nowadays, cardholders can complete payment by “tapping” UnionPay cards on over 1,000 POS terminals in Taiwan and no signature is required if the purchasing amount is less than TWD 3,000. The establishment of micro payment upper limit not only complies with the international conventions, but also ensures the card using security in a better manner. Holding UnionPay cards in the hand on purchasing can lower such risks as card skimming and information breach to some extent.

According to Cai Jianbo, the usage of UnionPay cards in Taiwan, Jinmen, Matsu, Penghu has become very convenient. This not only satisfies the payment demands of individuals from the Chinese Mainland to Taiwan, but also provides secure and convenient payment service for UnionPay cardholders in Hong Kong, Macao, Korea and Japan, enabling them to experience local life in Taiwan. Based on the trend of technology development as well as changing card-using habits of cardholders, we have expanded our cooperation with mainstream institutions in Taiwan this year and enabled a batch of large-scale merchants and places of daily purchasing to accept UnionPay “QuickPass”. Currently, the demonstration effect of innovative payments in the Taiwan market has gradually gained strength.

According to Shang Ruiqiang, Taishin Bank is ready to accelerate its cooperation with UnionPay International in aspects such as innovative payment and service improvement. In the future, we will apply UnionPay “QuickPass” for mPOS mobile payment. In addition to expanding traditional UnionPay card acceptance business, Taishin Bank will attach more significance to the cooperation in the field of mobile payment and join hands with UnionPay International to improve the payment experience of its customers.

At present, over 90% of ATMs and more than 70% of merchants in Taiwan accept UnionPay cards. The acceptance network not only covers department stores, hotels, tourism spots and other places frequently visited by tourists, but also extends to daily purchasing fields. Cardholders can take high-speed railway, all lines of TMS and taxies by using UnionPay cards. Besides, they can complete payment via UnionPay mPOS in the Taipei night market and experience the local life more conveniently.
