UnionPay card services upgraded in Taiwan
Taiwan High Speed Rail online ticket booking and China Airlines inflight shopping supports UnionPay for the first time

UnionPay International announced on April 10 it launched online ticket booking service with Unionpay credit cards (card number starting with 62) in cooperation with Taiwan High Speed Rail and UnionPay card payment service for shopping in China Airlines flights, providing more convenient, secure and preferential payment experience to tourists visiting Taiwan. Ge Huayong, Chairman of UnionPay International, Cai Jianbo, CEO of UnionPay International, Wei Chi Liu, Chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail, and Sun Hung-hsiang, Chairman of China Airlines jointly attended the launch ceremony.

From today on, UnionPay cardholders will be able to book Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets online, and enjoy the exclusive privilege of direct upgrading to business class from May 5 to December 31. With this service available, cardholders are able to easily plan their trip in Taiwan before departure. In the meantime, as an airline company providing the most cross-Strait direct flights, China Airlines has become the first airline company that has launched UnionPay card inflight shopping service in Taiwan. Moreover, cardholders could also enjoy exclusive discounts.

Ge Huayong said UnionPay attaches great importance to the Taiwan market and actively cooperate with local institutions in recent years to provide all parties in the industry with a platform for cooperation and development, serving cross-Strait trade and personnel exchanges as well as providing quality payment services by leveraging UnionPay’s global network advantages. By partnering with Taiwan High Speed Rail and China Airlines, UnionPay card services are extended to more areas to enable global cardholders to enjoy convenient and preferential payment services in every aspect of their travel. In the future we will enhance cooperation with all parties in the Taiwan market to continuously optimize card-using service level.

Wei Chi Liu said Taiwan High Speed Rail has enabled payment with UnionPay credit cards for purchasing tickets at ticket windows since 2010 and the launch of online ticket booking service is an important step for the cooperation between the two sides. In the future we will gradually enable payment with UnionPay cards for buying tickets at automatic machines and with mobile phones to better meet tourists’ diversified payment demands.

Sun Hung-hsiang said China Airlines is delighted to becoming Taiwan’s first airline company that has launched UnionPay card inflight shopping service. Since the launch of cross-Strait direct flights, nearly 150 China Airlines flights are made from Taiwan to the Chinese mainland each week. From today on, tourists will be able to conveniently purchase Taiwan specialties inflight with UnionPay cards. The two sides will also expand their cooperation to provide more cardholders with considerate services.

Teng Cheng Liu, Chairman of Taiwan’s National Credit Card Center and Tong-Liang Wu, Chairman of Taishin International Bank, who were also present at the ceremony, said UnionPay has the world’s largest cardholder base and they are delighted to witness the deepened cooperation between UnionPay International and Taiwan High Speed Rail and China Airlines. The move not only will provide convenience to an increasing number of tourists visiting Taiwan, but also will bring local banks and merchants with more acquiring businesses.

In 2014, the number of tourists on individual tours from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan reached more than 1.18 million, a year-on-year growth of 126%, with an average stay of 7 days. Starting from April 15, residents from 11 more Chinese mainland cities can visit Taiwan on individual tours. Against this background, UnionPay International has been devoted to creating a more convenient payment experience for tourists visiting Taiwan. At present, UnionPay cards are accepted by over 70% of merchants and over 90% of ATMs in Taiwan. Cardholders can also take the Taiwan High Speed Rail, the Taiwan Railway as well as taxis of the Taiwan Taxi by paying with UnionPay cards.
