UnionPay’s u•plan Platform Adds Another 80+ Chinese Partners
2021-11-09

UnionPay International (UPI) announced today more than 80 partners from the Chinese mainland in the finance, travel, and service sectors have joined u•plan, including the Bank of Beijing, Bank of Jiangsu, and Hainan Airlines. UnionPay cardholders can enjoy significant discounts when paying in store or online with coupons available on the official apps and official WeChat accounts of such partners.

U•plan, the world’s first open platform for cross-border marketing service launched by an international card scheme, integrates card issuers, acquirers, travel agencies, and merchants into the same industry chain, making benefits for cross-border spending more visible, verifiable, and accessible. Over the five years since its launch, more than 10,000 merchants have leveraged the platform to provide exclusive offers to UnionPay cardholders. This expansion allows u•plan coupons to be readily collected via the official channels of 260 prominent banks, travel agencies, internet companies, and airlines at home and abroad.

Taking into account international travel restrictions, UPI has shifted more offerings of u•plan merchants online and launched value-added services such as benefits customization, merchandise distribution, and livestream marketing to keep adding to the apps of its partners and promote products for overseas merchants. In the past 10 months, the number of transactions on u•plan by UnionPay cardholders has increased by nearly 20% against all odds.

More partners have been attracted to join the platform, this time including 52 local banks, local service apps such as the Nanjing Citizen Card, and travel industry players such as airlines and transit card operators. Thus a large number of users across the country can shop more easily and economically when they travel internationally out of necessity or shop purchase online from overseas.

Besides, UPI has expanded the service scope of u•plan to include overseas consumers, as more and more international cardholders use UnionPay cards for daily payments. At present, 13 banks in Hong Kong, Macao, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Mongolia have joined the platform, with discounts offered by well-known merchants such as Sasa, Bonjour, Colourmix, Broadway, McDonald’s, Singapore Changi Airport, and the Mall Group of Thailand.
