Russia’s largest supermarket chain enables UnionPay acceptance
UnionPay Purchases at Supermarkets Are Made Easier, Resulting in 50% Growth in Transaction Volume This Year
2020-12-15

UnionPay International (UPI) announced today it has reached cooperation with Magnit, the largest supermarket chain in Russia, to have all its 20,000 stores accept UnionPay cards. The expansion of supermarket acceptance has provided incentives for cardholders to use UnionPay cards in everyday life. The first 11 months of this year saw a year-on-year growth of over 50% in transaction volume in local supermarkets, generated by UnionPay cards issued outside Mainland China. In particular, the growth more than doubled in Hong Kong and Pakistan.

In the midst of COVID-19, UPI has actively partnered with institutions and businesses worldwide. Together, diversified retail scenarios have been developed to cover international supermarket chains, local specialty stores and 24-hour convenience stores in several markets, allowing overseas UnionPay cardholders to pay for their everyday purchases easily and securely. UnionPay cards are accepted at local giants such as Mannings in Hong Kong and Woolworths in Australia, Carrefour and Costco stores in locations within the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, FamilyMart and 7-Eleven stores in multiple markets, and well-known Chinese supermarkets such as FoodyMart Warden in Canada and Orange Supermarket in Australia.

In addition to Magnit, Coles Group, one of the largest retail groups in Australia, has recently enabled UnionPay card acceptance. Cardholders are now able to pay with UnionPay cards or UnionPay-powered mobile pay products at over 2,400 supermarkets in the country.

UnionPay’s acceptance network has been extended to 179 countries and regions, covering 32 million merchants outside Mainland China. In recent years, UPI has been building increasingly diversified payment scenarios that make local residents’ life easier. They include public transit, small and medium-sized retailers, and restaurants. Almost full acceptance of UnionPay cards has been achieved in Hong Kong, Macao, Mongolia, the UAE and Russia. The coverage has reached 70% in Europe, 70% in North America and 96% in the Asia Pacific.
