On March 22nd, UnionPay International and MEPS (Middle East Payment Services), the second largest acquirer in Jordan signed a cooperation agreement, according to which all POS terminals of MEPS will be able to accept UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62) by the end of this year. Then, UnionPay cards will be accepted at all ATMs and merchants in Jordan, bringing convenience to UnionPay cardholders visiting the country. Ge Huayong, Chairman of China UnionPay and Caesar Qulajen, President of MEPS attended the ceremony.

Jordan is one of the significant countries along the “One Belt, One Road”, and China and Jordan have carried out close cooperation in fields like transportation, energy and infrastructure. Conforming to the expansion of personnel exchanges between the two countries, 100% of ATMs and 65% of merchants in Jordan have already accepted UnionPay cards. In this context, MEPS also hopes to offer UnionPay card as a new payment option for its 6,000 or so merchants to help them attract more consumers. In the future, MEPS will enable its ATMs and merchants in Pakistan and Iraq to accept UnionPay cards.

According to Ge Huayong, benefited from the implementation of “The Belt and Road” strategy, UnionPay’s business in Jordan has achieved substantial progress. Since last year, our project with the two major acquires in Jordan is progressing smoothly, and will realize full acceptance of UnionPay cards this year. The landing of the project will comprehensively improve our service capability for UnionPay cardholders visiting Jordan. In the future, we will continue to join hands with major institutions so as to realize large-scale card-issuance here, and to enable residents in Jordan to enjoy convenient payment experiences both at home and in the Middle East.

Caesar Qulajen said, UnionPay plays a significant role in the payment industry, therefore MEPS is very glad to cooperate with UnionPay International. Through our cooperation, we will be able to provide merchants and cardholders with more secure electronic payment services, and thus consolidate our role as an innovative payment service provider in the Middle East.

Now, residents in Jordan are able to enjoy the quality services as well as abundant privileges offered by UnionPay globally. In December 2015, UnionPay International and ICC agreed to jointly issue UnionPay credit cards, business cards, and prepaid cards from the second quarter of this year. These UnionPay card products will facilitate the “Going Out” of the local residents.

UnionPay cards can also be used conveniently in other regions of the Middle East. Currently, 11 countries and regions, including Jordan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey, Oman, Yemen, Iraq and Qatar accept UnionPay cards for payment. Meanwhile, UnionPay International is enhancing its cooperation with major institutions in the Middle East, and actively promoting the localization of UnionPay card business while unremittingly improving its acceptance footprint.
