2016-01-20

On January 20, UnionPay International and Dubai Tourism announced their partnership in Shanghai, agreeing to jointly enhance the payment convenience in Dubai for UnionPay cardholders through resource sharing and advantage complementing. With this cooperation, the two sides jointly launch a marketing campaign for UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62) at over one hundred merchants in Dubai. Dong Li, CBO of UnionPay International, and Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Tourism attended the MOU signing ceremony.

Tapping on its rich tourism resources, Dubai Tourism is endeavoring to build the city into one of the world’s most renowned tourist destinations. To fulfill this goal, Dubai Tourism has set a target of receiving 20 million tourists each year before 2020. And it regards China as a crucial source of tourists. Since UnionPay card is an important payment method favored by Chinese outbound tourists, and UnionPay International shares the common goal with Dubai Tourism, the cooperation between the two parties comes natural.

The two sides will mainly cooperate in three aspects: First, to jointly improve the UnionPay card acceptance footprint in Dubai and encourage more quality merchants to provide offers and privileges for UnionPay cards. Second, to encourage cardholders visiting Dubai to pay with UnionPay cards by organizing diversified activities, including shopping festivals, tourism forums, and brand promotion. Third, to share tourism-related information and data to improve tourism service.

Dong Li said, “UnionPay’s acceptance footprint and service system in the UAE has witnessed continuous improvement over the years. We believe that the cooperation with Dubai Tourism will help us better serve UnionPay cardholders visiting Dubai. Currently, UnionPay International is actively conducting crossover cooperation with the tourism industry: We have formed strategic partnership with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and have maintained a close relationship with tourism departments in many countries and regions, jointly providing secure, convenient and preferential payment services for the global tourists."

Issam Kazim said, “We are very happy to cooperate with UnionPay International. With 97 large-scale malls and shopping centers hosting the world’s top brands and products, Dubai attracts large numbers of global tourists to come shopping. China is the fastest-growing source of tourists for Dubai, and the Chinese tourists visiting Dubai realized a year-on-year growth of 30% in 2015. In this context, we decide to cooperate with UnionPay International at this right moment. We hope to attract more tourists from China through this strategic partnership, and will also tap on the local resource to support UnionPay’s expansion in Dubai."

To support this partnership, UnionPay International and Dubai Tourism are launching a marketing campaign for the upcoming Spring Festival. From February 1 to February 29, 2016, UnionPay cardholders will be able to enjoy 10-25%-off discounts at over 120 renowned merchants in Dubai, covering restaurants, shopping malls and entertainments. The official website of Dubai Tourism has launched a subject page of UnionPay offers.

Currently, UnionPay has expanded its presence in 11 countries and regions in the Middle East. In the UAE, UnionPay cards are accepted at all POS terminals, and various UnionPay card products have been issued locally. In terms of online payment, the official websites of Emirates Airlines in Chinese and English support online payment with UnionPay cards, its websites in other languages will also launch such service in the near future.
