Tourism stakeholders have been urged to accept UnionPay cards if they are to get accredited and promoted to the vast Chinese tourism market through the China ready program.

Facilitator and expert of the China Ready program, Dr Marcus Lee, emphasised the importance of facilitating the credit finance cards which serves a majority of China's enormous tourist population.Air Niugini organised a workshop on China ready in partnership with the Tourism Promotion Authority for stakeholders in the tourism sector.

Participants included tour operators, lodges, inns, hotels, from NCD and other provinces, all of whom confirmed they did not accept the bankcard for payments.

Established in March 2002, UnionPay is a bankcard association established under the approval of the State Council and the People's Bank of China.

At present, the Shanghai-headquartered UnionPay has about 400 domestic and overseas associate members.

The card system meets the growing demand for card use of the Chinese in overseas business, travel and study, and to extend the services of domestic commercial banks abroad though its UnionPay network.

Dr Lee said with the country poised to attract the Chinese market- the lack of UnionPay will create issues for tourist visitors from the country.

"One of the first things that Chinese tourists come and they look around for is the logo of free wifi and then a logo of UnionPay," he said.

"One of the requirements for accreditation to China Ready is also UnionPay."They use union pay because there is no interest charged to whatever fee that is used in 150 countries," he said.

Air Niugini CEO, Simon Foo, said the airline will get clarification to undertake the bankcard brand."We don't have it at the moment. If we don't we will certainly get onto it straight away," he said."I will go and talk to the bank to make sure if we are not linked up with UnionPay then we should."Air Niugini is set to open up direct flights to Shanghai in the first quarter of 2018 with the workshop aimed at preparing stakeholders for expected increase in Chinese tourists into the country as a result.
