UnionPay cards are accepted at 80% of ATMs and merchants in Uganda 
  • Uganda – Watery Place on Plateau
    As an inland country of east Africa and known as the “Watery Place on Plateau”, Uganda stretches over the Equator, and has the majority of its territory being Central African plateaus and lakes with average altitude between 1,000 and 1,200 m. Kampala, the capital of Uganda, ranks to be the largest city nationwide and the prefecture where Buganda is located. Lake Victoria yields wandering wave and has flickering palms on the bank. The urban area features magnificent buildings, broad streets, lush trees, flowers in full blossom and beautiful scenery, for which it becomes a famous tourist city in Africa. In addition, there are two world natural heritages in Uganda, namely Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Why not take your UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62) to satisfy the interest of travel in the “Watery Place on Plateau”.
  • POS acceptance
    Merchants displaying the signage of   accept UnionPay cards. Since that some of the merchants have yet to put up the UnionPay signage, cardholders may show their UnionPay cards upon the till and inquire about UnionPay acceptance.

    When using co-branded cards, you are advised to choose UnionPay as the routing option to be benefited from the special offers and services provided by UnionPay.

    Note:Some UnionPay card acceptors or acquirers route co-branded cards  to corresponding card shcem according to the card BIN, which means co-branded cards transactions aren't routed to UnionPay without selection by cardholders and merchant cashiers. Please refer to the transaction results for the information about transaction routing.
  • Cash withdrawal
    In Uganda, UnionPay cards are accepted for cash withdrawal and balance inquiry at local ATMs of Standard Chartered Bankand Equity Bank.

    Please refer to the latest government policy on overseas cash withdrawal via UnionPay cards at" Help Center-Card-using Instructions-Refined Card-using Tips". Daily cash withdrawal limit from respective issuers and/or ATM may apply. Please consult your issuer on the possible cap on the amount. You may split your withdrawals into several times which comply with the limit(s).
  • Charges
    ATM commission fee consists of two parts:
    (1)Service fee charged by the issuer: please consult the issuer for details.
    (2)Service fee charged by the ATM acquirer in Uganda: some ATMs will charge commission fee, which is charged by the local banks in Uganda and which has nothing to do with UnionPay or the issuer.

    Cash withdrawal via debit card results in a lower commission fee.
  • Tips
    Select PINs that cannot be easily guessed by anyone.
    Never disclose your PIN to anyone who claims to represent the bank or the police.
    Be alert to your surroundings before conducting any banking transactions.
    Keep a close eye on your credit card during transaction to avoid any illegal activities.
    If your UnionPay card has been stolen/lost, please inform the issuer immediately.
